The energy in what we throw away: biomass and the circular economy

When renewable energy is discussed, the image that appears is a wind farm or a field of panels. The European reality looks different: in 2021, about 59% of the European Union’s renewable energy consumption came from biomass. More than all the other renewable sources put together.

It is Europe’s largest renewable source and the one least talked about. The reason is simple: it does not look spectacular. A solar panel makes a good photograph. A heap of agricultural residue does not.

What biomass actually is

Organic matter: residues from forestry and agriculture, waste and residues of biological origin, the biodegradable fraction of waste. In other words, largely, what is left over once something else has been produced.

This is where the stake for inventiveness lies. An agricultural residue has three possible fates: to be burned in the field, to be left to rot, or to be turned into something. The difference between the third and the first two is not a new resource — it is a technical solution.

Where two problems meet

The circular economy is not an environmental slogan. It is an economic observation: every waste stream is, technically, a raw material with a negative price. Somebody is paying to be rid of it.

An invention that turns that stream into a product has a rare advantage: the raw material costs nothing, and may even pay whoever takes it away. There are few places in an economy where the equation starts so favourably — and that is precisely why it is fertile ground for applied technical creation.

What has changed in the rules

The revised European renewable energy directive (EU/2023/2413, in force since November 2023) has significantly tightened the criteria for biomass. Primary and old-growth forests, highly biodiverse grassland and peatland are excluded from support and from counting towards targets. Installations above 7.5 MW must demonstrate emissions reductions. Forest-biomass plants producing electricity only can no longer receive new subsidies.

The direction is clear and worth understanding correctly: not all biomass counts any more. The kind that comes from residues and waste is gaining ground; the kind that involves felling a forest in order to burn it is losing it. For an inventor this is not a restriction but an indication of where the market is opening.

Why it is a Romanian subject

Romania has extensive agriculture, and therefore large quantities of plant residue, and it has regions where burning that residue in the field is still ordinary practice — with consequences for soil and air. At the same time its renewable share leans heavily on hydro and wind, and is therefore seasonal.

The overlap of those two facts describes a technical opportunity rather than an environmental problem: a steady stream of cheap raw material, in an energy system that needs steadiness.

Where inventors come in

Not in large-scale energy production — there, capital and regulation decide. But in the small links, which are solved by technical means: collecting and densifying residue scattered over large areas, clean combustion at small scale, recovering what remains after combustion as a soil improver, equipment affordable to a single farm or village.

These are unspectacular problems with a real market and low barriers to entry. Exactly the kind of problem an inventor without a national laboratory behind them tends to work on.
